Welcome to the Year of: FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDS - "GUIDELINES FOR LIFE"
Watchword: COMMITMENT Dick and I hope that none of our Eastern Star members ever become the missing "I" from our Watchword Motto : "I have a Commitment To My Faith, Family, Friends and to My Eastern Star Chapter
Dear Sisters and Brothers, The Worthy Patron and I have as our theme this year “FAITH, FAMILY AND FRIENDS: GUIDELINES FOR LIFE". Our Faith guides us in our daily lives, our Families are a gift from God, our Friends stand beside us and share in both our happiness and sadness. What we choose in Faith, how we raise and treat our Family and Friends, shows which Guidelines for Life each of us choose to live. Our Flower is the Red Rose - a symbol of the fraternal love we share. Our Watchword – Commitment - is to make each of us stop and think about how committed we are to our Faith, Family, Friends and to our beautiful Order of the Eastern Star. Our Symbols - the Church, a place of comfort, the Cross, a sign of affliction where Jesus was crucified, the Anchor, to secure our Faith in and for our Family and Friends. This year the Charities of our Grand Chapter will be emphasized. We ask that you donate as you have in past years with budgeted amounts as well as special Sunshine collections or donations. The Worthy Grand Patron and I are asking in lieu of gifts to us when we are in your chapter or district, that you consider a donation to our special project, which is a bus for the residents of our Eastern Star Home in Mt Vernon. We also have a very special project this year, which is Duchene's Muscular Dystrophy. Duchenne's is an inherited disease. It is caused by a defective gene. Children ages two to sixteen are affected and symptoms include muscle weakness and the wasting away of the muscles of hands, forearms and lower legs. Survival beyond the mid-20's is rare. It affects mostly boys and they are usually in a wheelchair early in life with some never being able to walk. Columbus Children's Hospital, along with several other Children's hospitals across the country, are working on a cure for Duchenne's. All monies received this year through Chapter's Sunshine donations designated for this project will go directly to Dr. Jerry Mendell, M.D., head of research at Columbus Children’s Hospital and will be used only for research. We ask that you make your check payable to Lucasville Chapter #495 stating on the memo line that it is to go to Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy. The check should be send to: Catherine F. Jones., Worthy Grand Matron, 1121 Meadow Lane, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662. I will be attending a fundraiser this summer for Duchene's, where I will present a check in the full amount of all donations to Dr. Mendell from our Ohio Order of the Eastern Star for his research. I hope you consider a donation of one of your Sunshine collections to this most worthy cause. We have chosen this project because children are our future. I hope many of you plan to join us on our Hawaiian Cruise July 12-20 when we will be visiting five of the beautiful islands of our 50th state. It will be a time for fellowship, fun and a little relaxation. Please see our Grand Warder about the trip. She has brochures that will give you all the needed information. I would like to end with a poem written by the Worthy Matron of Lucasville Chapter in 1962 called: "MY EASTERN STAR BALLOT" This is an Order that I love, A gift of mine from up above, I am allowed to choose each member, A privilege that I hold so tender, To me it is a sacred duty Because my chapter gave it to me. On morals only do I choose; A thought that I should never lose. If I abuse this sacred gift; My eyes to heav'n I could not lift. Past hurts or snubs should never sway My vote to keep someone away. If in spite a cube I'd place, I'm sure my friends I could not face. Oh Lord, forgive me, lest I judge My fellow man, or hold a grudge. I would not want to answer for it. I know my Savior would abhor it. So let's be fair to one another, Love and respect each Sister and Brother. Star Love, Cathie Jones, WGM
The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both men and women may belong. Eastern Star is a social order comprised of persons with spiritual values but it is not a religion. Its appeal rests in the true beauty of the refreshing and character-building lessons that are so sincerely portrayed in its ritualistic work. A deep fraternal bond exists between its members. It is the wholesome relationship of sisterly and brotherly love brought about through high principles exemplified in our lives which makes us near and dear to each other. While this is an Order composed of people of deep spiritual convictions, it is open to all faiths, except no faith. The personal welfare of our members is vital to all of those in the Eastern Star and it is considered a privilege to help another member whenever we can.
